Biography

Baek Kyong Jo is a Ph.D. student at IHPST. His research investigates the development of biopolitics in the last decades of the Ottoman Empire and how this new mode of governance affected the historical shaping of collective identities in the Ottoman and post-Ottoman lands. To pioneer the understudied dimension of Ottoman biopolitics, he anticipates making extensive use of photographs with which scientists and bureaucrats visually categorized and archived Ottoman bodies.

Before joining IHPST, he completed a BA and MA in West Asian studies from Seoul National University.
